Presbyterian News First Presbyterian Church of Dadeville 171 Okefuske Street Dadeville, Alabama
Volume # 11, Issue #5 Published by Eve Pangburn - January 2012 FROM THE PASTOR January 6 is Epiphany. Some traditions in the Christian church celebrate that day to commemorate the visit of the magi to the Christ Child. In some manger scenes, the wise men are placed at some distance from the manger and moved closer each day beginning with Christmas until they arrive on January 6 . In some countries, they give their gifts on Epiphany rather than Christmas, as the magi gave their gifts. The magi came because of a star in the sky, which all could see. They were the only visitors that we know of who were not Jews. So far as we know, the wise men were the only visitors who might have been Presbyterians. And, in some sense, they did visit the Christ Child for us. Christ did not come only to the Jews but to the Gentiles as well. The magi show us that Christ came to us. One year on A Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor retold the Christmas story. He told about the magi in this way: There were three wise men from an eastern university. There was an assistant wise man and an associate wise man, and there was the chairman of the Wisdom Department. And they came bringing gifts. And they worshiped the child, and they believed instantly when they saw it, even though worship had not been the purpose of the grant.... the shepherds were the lucky ones, when you come right down to it. 'Cause they saw it all. They were there. It all happened to them. The good news for us is that what happened in our world when Christ came is so powerful that, even though we did not see it ourselves, it happened to us, too. The life born at Christmas and made known to all in Epiphany still lives, and that life lives in us. In Christ, Bill
Ginny Acton, Jimmy Parrish, Janice Yarborough, Marshal Stewart, Jeanette Gilbert, Lynita Martin, Barry and Tommy Chatham, Bill and Joann Love, Ben McIntosh, Eve’s niece, Carolyn Prescott, our military men and women and their families, the homeless, jobless, depressed, oppressed, people who are having financial problems, leaders in our communities, nation and world, and peace throughout God's world.
Presbyterian Women The next PW Meeting will be Tuesday, January 10th. Eve Pangburn will switch with Suzanne Stanford as our hostess and will give the lesson. Jeanette Gilbert wishes to thank the ladies for the Christmas basket, all the fruit and goodies. She hopes to soon be home and be able to stay at various times and see us all at church. You’re in our prayers Jeanette. Last month's meeting at Dawn's was fantastic. There were 21 present. Debbie Evers combined the “Sneaky Santa” game with “bingo” and "editable" bingo markers. “Tree Ornaments” went like “Candy Canes“. We were so glad to have Harry Cleveland and Cindy Gillenwaters there, they both added to our delight. To say nothing about Lamar Evers, holding a bingo card that won at least six times...to bad he could have only one ornament at a time.
Thank you, Dawn and Dale for you
wonderful hospitability! Bible Studies Bible Study is at 3:00 pm every Wednesday In the fellowship hall. All members and non-members are welcome. We will be starting a new study in January. You owe it to yourself to make time to attend. We are really learning a great deal. Isn't there anything in the world that you would like to share? We need pictures of when you were young. It doesn’t matter if you are recognized…we’d like to see you anyway. Also, you will want to submit your “Kids Doings and Sayings”. Surely you remember something cute, or not so cute, your children have done. What about telling us about the vacation you took “last week”....or farther back in time”. Everyone remembers something… Like: “They” said that Thanksgiving (1985) would be the best time the see Halley’s’ Comet. So Eve and Dick Pangburn went to Death Valley....wide open skies, right? It rained. Death Valley probable get 8-tenths of an inch per year. We did get to see “Scotty’s Castle” and the desert is beautiful when wet...it brings out all the colors. Then, the time we went to Washington, DC. But as just recently....the powers that be, didn’t come up with a budget...and all the National Monuments were closed. You just have to go with the flow. Fortunately Mount Vernon is not government endowed. By the next day the budget was pasted and we continued on our planned way... See how easy it is...just write it down and give it to Eve.
